I always love to travel across the nation and explore all kinds of sights with my family and friends. While driving down the road, however, it can be easy to get eyestrain or drowsiness from staring down the long highway for hours at a time. To stay safe, discover different ways to prevent fatigue on long road trips.
1. Take Frequent Breaks
Pull over and step out of the vehicle at least every two or three hours. Stretching your legs, taking a short walk, and moving your body keeps your circulation flowing and reduces fatigue. I find that this quick reset can re-energize both your mind and body for the rest of your trip.
Also, switch drivers every so often if you’re traveling with family or friends. Sharing the wheel allows you to rest between shifts and let someone else take over. By creating a driving schedule, you’ll keep all your passengers safe and equally well-rested.

2. Stay Hydrated
Dehydration can contribute to exhaustion, so keep a water bottle close as you’re driving. Proper hydration improves focus and combats signs of fatigue.
3. Plan Caffeinated Pit Stops
Enjoying a quick coffee break at a rest stop can do wonders to keep your energy up. Caffeine stimulates your central nervous system to fight off sleepiness and maintain your alertness. Bring your favorite travel mug, and keep a stash of instant coffee or tea bags to prevent fatigue on long road trips.

4. Keep Your Playlist Fresh
Nothing beats a playlist packed with upbeat music to get you through a long drive. If this starts to get monotonous, swap out the tunes for an engaging podcast or audiobook. If your vehicle has an outdated sound system, you’ll need a pro to install a new car radio before the trip so that you can listen to your favorite audio throughout the drive.
5. Check Your Vehicle’s Features
Modern vehicles typically include adaptive cruise control or lane assist to help reduce strain during long drives. If you’re driving an older model, consider upgrading your car’s system or renting an RV instead. An RV is a great option if your family or friends want to include camping in your trip. Just make sure to get your RV ready for your summer road trip ahead of time.
Before setting off on your drive, pack some snacks and drinks. I try to keep these items close to the driver’s seat for easy access. With these helpful tips, you’ll be able to drive to your destination safely and get the most out of the experience.
