Winter can be a magical season, but getting kids to embrace the frosty outdoors instead of hibernating on the couch? That’s no small feat. I know how easy it is to feel defeated when the snow piles up and screens become the go-to boredom cure. But trust me, you can turn winter into an opportunity for your kids to explore, play, and make those same memories that we look back on so fondly. The key is finding ways to encourage kids to get outside during winter and making those chilly adventures a little more exciting.
Let’s talk about a few strategies that have worked wonders for my family.
Dress for Success
When it comes to winter fun, the right gear can make all the difference. Nobody wants to go sledding or build snow forts if they’re shivering five minutes in. Make sure your kids have warm, layered clothing, waterproof boots, and accessories like gloves and hats they actually like wearing. Keep the process fun by letting them choose a cool beanie or quirky socks they’ll enjoy showing off.
And don’t forget about yourself! Having handy winter essentials to take care of your skin after a long time in the cold helps you enjoy the outings without worrying about dry, cracked skin afterward.

Turn Your Yard Into a Winter Playground
One of the easiest ways to keep your kids active is to make home the hub for winter play. If you’ve got a backyard, it’s time to create some snow-based entertainment. From mini sledding tracks to snowball “battlefields,” the only limit is your imagination (and maybe how much snow you’ve got!).
We have outdoor play equipment at our home, but I try not to let a layer of snow make the kids’ favorite playspace off limits. Making sure to winterize any wooden playground equipment keeps year-round fun possible (and safe). Smooth out slippery spots, check for ice, and make sure everything is in top condition before your kids start climbing and swinging.
Add Some Structure
If your kids aren’t enthused about snowball fights or snow angels, I recommend creating some games that have a bit more purpose. Organizing small scavenger hunts or themed outdoor adventures gives kids a good reason to bundle up and head out. Tasks like “hunt for pinecones,” “build the tallest snowman,” or even “create a snow obstacle course” keep kids focused and engaged—just expect to lend them a hand!

Making the Most of Winter
Whether it’s their first snow angel or a backyard snow fort that rivals the pros, winter memories are worth the effort.
If you’ve been wondering how to encourage kids to get outside during winter, I say start small, experiment with different activities, and make the cold seem a little less daunting. Bundling up and stepping out might not feel natural at first, but the smiles on your kids’ faces will make it all worthwhile. Before long, they might be the ones pushing you to grab your gloves and join them in the snow!
