Spring break is officially here, and this year I wanted to try something a little different — something that would keep the kids engaged, learning, and excited to actually participate.
So instead of just planning outings, we decided to turn part of our week into a spring break STEM activity for kids… and let me tell you, this one came with a challenge 😅
We’re currently in the middle of building our very own robot vacuum cleaner — yes, a real one that actually moves and cleans — and I wasn’t totally sure what we were getting ourselves into at first 🫣😂
Turning Spring Cleaning Into a Fun Challenge
If you’ve been following along, you know I’m always looking for ways to make everyday moments a little more fun — and spring cleaning felt like the perfect opportunity.
Instead of just cleaning up, we’re building something that does the cleaning.
We’re using the Dusty Robot Vacuum Cleaner by Thames & Kosmos, a STEM kit for kids that lets them build everything from scratch and then watch it come to life.
Piece by piece, we’re putting it together — and I’ll be honest, there were definitely a few moments already where I thought…
👉 wait… are we actually going to figure this out?! 😱😂

What Makes This STEM Kit So Different
What I love about this so far is that it’s not one of those builds that just sits on a shelf once you’re done.
This is a build your own robot vacuum that actually does something.
Once completed, Dusty is designed to roll across surfaces picking up dust, crumbs, and lint — basically turning a small everyday mess into something the kids can take care of themselves.
It also includes some really cool features that make it feel like a real piece of technology:
- Sensors to help avoid obstacles
- Edge detection so it doesn’t fall off the table
- Smooth movement across different surfaces
- A fun light-up signal when the job is done
It’s honestly such a great example of how educational STEM toys can connect learning with real-life use.
What It’s Been Like So Far (Real Mom Update 😅)
We’re still in the process of building it, but I already wanted to share because this has been such a fun experience to do together.
My daughter has been so excited to sit down and work on it — and the best part is that she doesn’t see it as “extra school.”
It feels like a challenge. A project. Something we’re figuring out together.
And I love that the pieces are transparent, so she can actually see how everything connects and moves. It turns this into a true hands-on learning activity for kids, not just another toy.

Why This Is Such a Good Spring Break Activity
If you’re currently looking for spring break activities for kids, especially ones that go beyond screen time, this is honestly such a great option.
It keeps them busy, gets them thinking, and gives them something to feel proud of once it’s complete.
And if you’re like me and trying to mix fun with learning during school breaks — this is exactly the kind of activity that makes it easier.

Would We Recommend It?
So far — yes, 100%.
Even though we’re still building, it’s already been such a fun and engaging experience.
And I already know that once it’s finished, seeing it actually move and clean is going to be one of those “we did it!” moments 🙌
Plus… anything that helps with crumbs around here is always a win 😂
Thinking of Trying This With Your Kids?
If your kids enjoy building, experimenting, or figuring things out step by step, this is definitely something worth trying.
It’s fun, a little challenging, and honestly a great way to spend time together during the break.

Stay Tuned…
We’re still working on it — so now I have to ask…
👉 Do you think we’ll successfully build it… or is this about to turn into a full “mom help!!” situation? 😅
I’ll definitely be sharing how it turns out (and if it actually cleans like it’s supposed to 👀)
