When you are thinking of road trips, Iceland is one of the best destinations that comes to mind. While this might sound exciting to solo travelers and couples, families often have to think twice to ensure they are safe while exploring Iceland’s rugged landscapes. A road trip in Iceland with family is a great idea, given the well-maintained roads, short driving distances between major attractions, and constantly changing landscapes.
However, having the right itinerary can make a whole lot of difference, especially when you are with your family and loved ones. In this guide, we focus on the 5-day Iceland itinerary that strikes the perfect balance between comfort and exploration.
Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavik and Exploring Blue Lagoon
Iceland is one of those destinations that instantly mesmerizes you with its natural beauty. However, upon arrival in Reykjavik, you can take some time before you decide to explore other natural landscapes. This is where you spend your first day exploring the capital city. You can start your day exploring the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church and the Harpa Concert Hall. Later, you can visit the Blue Lagoon, a man-made geothermal spa, which is a great way to relax and unwind at your own pace. You can end your day with a lovely dinner and prepare yourself for the adventure the next day.

Day 2: Explore the Golden Circle
You can begin your second day exploring the iconic Golden Circle. This is one of the easiest routes that offers you some amazing views of Iceland. You can rent a campervan, which allows you to manage your tour and stop at various locations. As you drive along the Golden Circle, you come across Þingvellir National Park, where you can walk between tectonic plates, followed by the Geysir geothermal area and the powerful Gullfoss waterfall. This is a great way to make the most of your second day in Iceland.

Day 3: Head South for Coastal Adventures
When you’re traveling with your family, you would certainly want to enjoy some beach time. If you have a campervan, you can head along Iceland’s scenic South Coast. As you drive along, you pass through scenic waterfalls and dramatic landscapes that define the journey. You can stop for some time at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, which are two iconic waterfalls you must definitely visit in Iceland. As you drive further south, you come to Reynisfjara Beach, which is a popular black sand beach near Vik.
Day 4: Explore Iceland’s Glaciers and Lagoons
As you continue your journey eastward, you can get the opportunity to explore Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking sights. This is where you get to witness icebergs drift across the water before washing up on nearby Diamond Beach. If you are looking for a family photo session, this is where you can take some incredible shots of the calm scenery and your family.
Day 5: Return to Reykjavik
When you are done exploring the East Coast, you would want to head to the capital city, intermittently stopping at various unknown viewpoints and attractions you may have missed. This offers you the flexibility to cover Iceland’s rugged landscape at your own pace before you bid this stunning destination farewell.
