If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a mom, it’s that travel leaves a lasting impression on our kids. Even if we can’t hop on a plane every summer, we can still open their hearts and minds to the world—one story at a time. And Hop Around is exactly the kind of diverse book for kids that makes that possible.
That’s why I was so excited to discover Hop Around by Shvona Chung. It’s a beautiful, travel-inspired children’s book that takes little readers on an adventure around the globe—starting in South Korea! And it does it all while celebrating friendship, diversity, and cultural discovery in the most magical way.
🐰 Meet the Hoppers: A Multicultural Adventure Crew
One of my favorite things about this book is the adorable crew of hoppers—half-bunny, half-animal friends who are all about exploring new places, trying different foods, and learning from others.
They each bring something unique to the table:
- Reppi loves music and art
- Cita speaks tons of languages
- Splash is always up for adventure
- Immy is sweet and thoughtful
- Bambu is the snack king (relatable, right?)
- Spotty brings the party
- And then there’s Phoenix, their unicorn-carriage that flies them around the world 🦩✨
It’s such a fun way to show kids that everyone’s differences make the world more interesting.

🌸 Our First Stop: South Korea!
The hoppers’ first stop is South Korea, and I loved how the book weaves in culture in a way kids can actually understand. Goomi, the girl they meet there, introduces them to things like:
- “Annyeong” (hello/goodbye in Korean)
- Gimbap, a rice and seaweed snack (my kids were instantly curious to try it!)
- A beautiful hanbok dress
- Traditional Pungmul dancing
- And even women divers at Jeju Island!
It’s all told in a way that’s super fun and lighthearted, but still meaningful. It made me wish I had something like this when my kids were smaller.
💬 A Book That Feels Like a Hug
What really made Hop Around special for me is how it was inspired by Shvona’s daughter, Goomi. She wanted her daughter to feel seen in stories, and that comes through on every page. The fact that each hopper is part bunny? It’s her sweet way of showing that while we’re all different, we’re also connected.
Whether your child is bi-racial, curious about the world, or just starting their reading journey, this book is a powerful tool to encourage curiosity, empathy, and inclusion.
