Getting ready for a family trip should be exciting, but I know the packing process can sometimes feel like a mountain of a task. Over the years, I’ve learned that a little planning can go a long way in turning a chaotic packing session into a smooth experience. It’s all about working smarter, not harder, so you can focus on making memories instead. Use my handy packing tips for a stress-free family vacation to get you started.
Organize Your Essentials
My first rule of family packing is to give everything a home. I love using packing cubes to separate outfits for each person or even for each day. This simple step prevents your suitcase from becoming a jumbled mess and makes finding that one specific t-shirt so much easier. I also create a “go-bag” with travel documents, chargers, and essential medications that stays with me at all times.

Pack Light, Pack Right
It’s tempting to bring everything “just in case,” but hauling heavy bags through an airport with kids is no one’s idea of fun. I lay out everything I think we need, then challenge myself to put a quarter of it back. We stick to versatile clothing items that you can mix and match. This leaves more room for souvenirs and less strain on our backs.

Get Creative With Packing Hacks
This is where the fun begins! We’ve all seen those clever packing travel hacks with pool noodles, and I’m here to tell you that some of them are actually helpful. They’re not just for the water! Though they are still perfect for water activities on vacation, you get double the use out of this little guy. Use pool noodles by slicing them open to protect fragile items or wrap up electronic cords to keep them from tangling in your suitcase or bag.
No Screens Means More Packing Space
Beyond just packing clothes, I also think about packing for our time together. All the kids always want to bring their electronics, but can I suggest a screen-free family vacation? Give everyone a chance to digitally detox and open new possibilities for conversations and memories made. Plus, without the extra items, you get bonus space when packing, giving everyone that much more room for that extra pair of shoes you know they want to bring.By using these packing tips for a stress-free family vacation, you can start it all on a positive note. Happy travels!
