As a parent, I know firsthand how much screen time has become a part of our daily lives. From schoolwork to downtime, screens are everywhere. But family vacations are a time to reconnect and make memories that last longer than an Instagram post. If you’re questioning whether a screen-free family vacation is right for your kids, my experiences might help guide your decision. It’s a big one, and the answer will ultimately depend on what works best for your family dynamic.
The Benefits of Unplugging on Vacation
When my family decided to go screen-free for a vacation, it was like hitting the reset button, and that was the point. Without phones, tablets, and laptops, we engaged with each other in ways we hadn’t in a long time. We played board games, told stories, and explored a new city together. Removing screens gave us the chance to focus on each other rather than notifications and games. For me, it felt like we were truly present, and that made our time together even more meaningful.
Plus, even during personal time, I was rediscovering old passions of my own. I can’t remember the last time I burned through a book a day—until that last trip.

The Challenges of a Screen-Free Vacation
That said, going screen-free wasn’t without its hurdles. There were moments when the kids felt bored or restless, and even I felt that way now and then. Plus, in our case, there was the question of the car rides—of which there were many during our stay.
While limiting screen time at the hotel and throughout our time at the destination had its benefits, there wasn’t much reason to limit it during the ride. Modern vehicles have 9-cavity connectors that offer many advantages, including the ability to install in-vehicle infotainment systems, and there’s no reason to waste the opportunity those systems provide. Putting on movies and playing music helped everyone pass the time without feeling restless, and it might do the same for your family.

Finding a Balance
While going entirely screen-free works for some families, others might prefer a middle path. We found success by setting boundaries rather than going cold turkey for the whole trip. For instance, we allowed screen time while navigating around the city or after one of the most fun-filled (and exhausting) days of our trip. It was less about banning technology and more about using it intentionally to enrich—not replace—our experiences.
Considering What’s Best
Deciding on a screen-free vacation means thinking about your kids’ routines, interests, and needs. Some kids might thrive on imaginative play and outdoor adventures, while others prefer downtime with digital entertainment. My kids loved being outdoors, but I wouldn’t say no to an hour of screen time if it helped them decompress. And, of course, keeping everyone comfortable on long road trips probably means breaking out some tech. Evaluate what will help your family relax and enjoy without letting screens take center stage.
Is It Right for Your Family?
At the end of the day, the question remains whether a screen-free family vacation is right for your kids. For my family, it was a blend of boundaries and flexibility that made it worthwhile. Maybe it’s a similar approach—or maybe your best memories will come from a trip full of unplugged adventures. Either way, the goal is to create time together in ways you’ll all cherish. Leave room for laughter, exploration, and maybe even a few tech-free surprises!
