A day spent on the water is a dream come true, but I always hated leaving my dog behind on my travels. He enjoys the sunshine and the cool breeze just as much as I do!
Eventually, I decided that there was no reason that he couldn’t tag along. From swimming to enjoying a boat ride to relaxing on the bank, I always think back to these amazing moments and feel excited thinking about the next one.
Perhaps you want to take your furry friend on a boating trip, too. Dogs bring high energy, curiosity, and a coat that needs upkeep after a splashy day. After packing item after item for yourself, don’t forget about the supplies they’ll need. These tips for caring for your dog will come in hand on the first boating trip together.
Practice Commands Before Reaching the Dock
One of my biggest fears is that my dog would struggle to behave around strangers on the boat. Know that a smooth boating day starts at home.
Dogs should know a few steady basics before stepping onto a rocking boat. “Sit,” “stay,” “leave it,” and a solid recall matter on the water because space stays tight and distractions hit hard. If they get wound up in new places, short practice sessions near docks, kayaks, or lakes will build their confidence before a full outing.
For my dog and me, finding an experienced dog trainer was a lifesaver. My pup struggled with overstimulation. Not only did the trainer go over standard commands, but he learned how to manage his impulse control and stay calm in new situations. Getting on the boat and having these skills was extremely helpful.

Pick Safety Gear That Fits
A dog life jacket isn’t optional. It should fit the dog snugly, feature a strong handle, and have a bright color that’s vibrant against the dark water.
My boy has a fluffy coat that loves to hide the straps; I check every single strap and test the handle before leaving, just to make sure he’s secure. I always let him walk around, sit, and lie down before splashing into the water or hopping on the boat. It’s another way to ensure he’s comfortable with the safety gear, too.

Watch the Heat Levels and the Pup’s Hydration
The sun hits people and dogs hard on the water. Heat reflects off the surface, and many dogs tend to push through any discomfort. A covered seat, cooling towel, or breezy spot out of direct sun keeps dogs comfortable.
I always keep a close eye on my dog’s breathing and energy level throughout the trip. Note that heavy panting, glassy eyes, or frantic pacing mean it’s time to call it good for the day.
Another issue I ran into was water. Even if dogs love to gulp down water, it will upset their stomach if they drink too much. Pack plenty of fresh water, and offer it often to keep your dog cool and energized.
Protect Their Paws, Ears, and Coats
Now that the fun is over, it’s time to incorporate some extra care to keep your pup healthy. After the ride, let the dog settle onto a towel or mat. Rinse them with clean water, and towel dry the coat well.
I give the ears, belly, and paws extra attention. Brush through tangles that form from wind, spray, and salt or lake residue before they tighten into mats.
A packed agenda visiting a dog-friendly destination won’t make the day a success. A short, calm outing often beats a long one that leaves dogs stressed, overheated, or wiped out. Take care of your dog using these tips, and have a joyful boating trip with your furry friend!
